If you're a fan of subtle, strategic horror games, then Sinister is for you. If you're a fan of the work of H.P. Lovecraft and his crazy cosmic horrors, then Sinister is DEFINITELY for you. In this first-person point-and-click adventure game from developer The Deep End Games, you take on the role of a novelist who's been contacted by the son of an old friend who'd been diagnosed with dementia and last seen in Rhode Island asking for help investigating his father's death -- which was ruled an accidental drowning at first but has now been marked as murder after police found evidence to back it up. The game takes its narrative cues from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, but the twisted plot itself (involving an investigation into a dark family history) is pure "Call of Cthulhu" stuff. The story opens with our protagonist, Marnie Barnard, eagerly anticipating her upcoming vacation to Providence, Rhode Island where she shares an old-time friendship with one of the game's main characters (and potential love interest). The game's primary gameplay mechanic is to use your mouse to move the protagonist around and interact with environments and objects in order to solve puzzles and move the plot forward. As you progress through the game you'll be able to collect letters from your past life as well as correspondence from your future self. The game's inventory system allows you to store tools, evidence, notes and evidence in order to help further the plot. The player must use these tools in puzzles in order to progress the story while remaining true to the Lovecraftian "more-is-more" mentality. It's pretty dang hard at times, especially if you're trying to solve some of the more obscure puzzles scattered about the house or forest that are meant to evoke dread or unease. All of that being said, I found myself enjoying this game despite its challenging puzzle sections. If you're a fan of old school first-person adventures, especially those with a "neat-o" ending (i.e. NOT the kind that include a lot of head-scratching, i.e. DAY OF THE TENTACLE), then Sinister is definitely worth the price of admission. It's not terribly long, but it's also not terribly short. Bottom Line: If you're a fan of first-person adventures and you enjoy intellectually challenging gameplay as well as Lovecraftian horror, Sinister is one hell of a good time for around 3 bucks... If you're not, then it's still worth dropping a few bucks on for the experience alone. Be forewarned: It's very short and has/had some pretty bad glitches but it's also very cheap and worth playing through. The whole concept of having to change the past in order to change the future is fascinating, and while it might require some hardcore thinking at points, it's never wildly frustrating. cfa1e77820
